The short version of our privacy policy: Our CGT calculators work entirely in your browser using JavaScript. The sale prices, purchase prices and income figures you enter are processed locally on your device and are never transmitted to our servers, stored in any database, or shared with any third party. We don’t know what numbers you entered.
Who We Are (Privacy Policy)
Tax Calculator AU operates the website at taxcalculatorau.com, provides free Australian Capital Gains Tax calculators and related educational content for Australian investors, property owners and taxpayers.
We are an Australian-based website committed to compliance with the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) and the Australian Privacy Principles (APPs). This privacy policy explains what personal information we collect, how we use it, and your rights as an individual.

Calculator Data What We Don’t Collect
This is the most important section for most visitors. Our CGT calculators — including the Property CGT Calculator, Shares CGT Calculator, Crypto CGT Calculator, Capital Loss Calculator, SMSF CGT Calculator, Business Sale CGT Calculator, and all state-specific calculators — run entirely in your browser.
When you enter figures into any of our calculators (sale price, purchase price, income, brokerage, etc.):
- We have no record of what you calculated, when, or for what asset
- Those numbers are processed by JavaScript running on your device
- No data is transmitted to our servers or any third party
- No data is stored in cookies, localStorage or any persistent storage
- When you close or refresh the page, all entered data is gone
What this means practically: You can enter real figures actual sale prices, real income numbers, genuine portfolio values without any concern that this information is being recorded or analysed. It isn’t. There is no account, no login, and no server-side processing of calculator inputs.
What We Do Collect
While we don’t collect calculator data, we do collect some information when you interact with other parts of the website clearly mentioned in our privacy policy:

We do not collect: financial data, tax return information, asset values, investment amounts, income figures, or any information entered into our calculators.

Google Analytics
We use Google Analytics to understand how visitors use our site. Google Analytics collects anonymised usage data including pages visited, session duration, browser type and country-level location. We have enabled IP anonymisation — your full IP address is never stored in Google Analytics.
Google Analytics data is processed by Google Inc. under their Privacy Policy. To opt out of Google Analytics across all websites, install the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on.
Managing Cookies
You can control cookies through your browser settings. Most browsers allow you to block all cookies, accept only first-party cookies, or clear existing cookies. Note that blocking cookies may affect some functionality (like remembering your calculator tab preference). Our calculators themselves do not use cookies and work fully with cookies disabled.
How We Use Your Information
We use the information we collect for the following purposes according to privacy policy:
- Newsletter: Sending CGT updates, new calculator announcements and budget changes — only if you subscribed. You can unsubscribe at any time via the link in every email.
- Contact responses: Replying to questions, topic suggestions or feedback you send us.
- Site improvement: Analytics data helps us understand which pages and calculators are most useful, so we can prioritise improvements.
- Security: Server logs and security cookies help protect the site from automated attacks.
We do not use your information for advertising, profiling, automated decision-making, or any purpose unrelated to providing and improving our service.
Third Parties & Data Sharing
We do not sell, rent, or share your personal information with third parties for marketing purposes. Period.
Service Providers
We use a small number of third-party services that may process some of your data as part of providing the website:
- Web hosting / CDN: Cloudflare and/or Pantheon (server infrastructure, content delivery). They process IP addresses as part of request routing and DDoS protection.
- Analytics: Google Analytics (anonymised usage data — see Cookies section above).
- Email delivery: If you subscribe to our newsletter, emails are sent via a third-party email service provider operating under the Australian Spam Act 2003. Your email is not shared with any other party.
Legal Requirements
We may disclose information to law enforcement or government authorities where required by Australian law, such as in response to a court order, subpoena, or regulatory requirement. We will notify you of any such disclosure where permitted to do so.
No Advertising Networks
Tax Calculator AU does not serve third-party advertising. We don’t have advertising partners, don’t use advertising cookies, and don’t share data with ad networks. Our site is supported by direct means only not by selling your attention to advertisers.
Your Rights Under Australian Privacy Law
Under the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) and the Australian Privacy Principles, you have the following rights regarding personal information we hold about you:
- Access: You can request access to the personal information we hold about you. We’ll provide it within a reasonable timeframe (generally 30 days).
- Correction: If information we hold is inaccurate, out of date, incomplete or misleading, you can request that we correct it.
- Deletion: You can request that we delete personal information we hold about you, subject to any legal retention requirements.
- Unsubscribe: You can unsubscribe from our newsletter at any time using the unsubscribe link in any email, or by emailing us directly.
- Complaints: You have the right to complain to us about any breach of this policy. If we don’t resolve it to your satisfaction, you can escalate to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC).
For calculator users: Because we don’t collect or store any data you enter into our calculators, there is no personal information to access, correct or delete. If you’d like to confirm this, feel free to reach out and we’ll explain exactly how the calculators work technically.
Security
We take reasonable steps to protect the personal information we hold from misuse, interference, loss, unauthorised access, modification or disclosure. Our security measures include:
- HTTPS encryption for all data in transit (enforced site-wide)
- DDoS protection and web application firewall via Cloudflare
- Regular security updates to all server-side software
- Limited staff access to any personal data held
- No storage of financial or calculator data (by design)
